Surviving Long Flights

WORK

If you are as unlucky as I was to have some essays and other work to do while you have multiple flights to look forward to, then you have to plan ahead. Print out any articles or papers you have to read for research and such as to avoid taking out a bulky laptop. If you have an essay to write, make sure you can access everything you need to write it offline just in case your plane doesn’t have wi-fi, or even worse, makes you pay for it.

FILMS

I like to break my flights down by how many films I can watch. For example, an 8 hour flight could be around 4 films, so scroll through the list of films once you get cozy in your seat to plan out which ones you want to watch; or you can also go through Netflix and download some shows and movies for offline streaming. This is especially great if you are in the middle of binging a series.

PUZZLES

From frustrating crossword puzzles to sudoku, these number and word puzzles will not only help you to pass the time, but can stimulate your mind. I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty accomplished when I actually complete one of these brain teasers.

BOOKS

Reading on a plane can be a bit annoying at times, but good books can definitely pass the time. Stick to books that you know you like, or that you have heard good things about and were recommended to you because nothing is worse than trying to read a boring book on your flight. If you have an e-reader, download a few books, but if you’re more old school, like me, then try not to waste too much space in your bag with bulky books.

MUSIC

Make sure that you have all the songs downloaded that you want to listen to over the duration of your flight. I recommend making playlists, or finding some that are long enough so that you won’t have to listen to the same song twice. Spotify Premium or YouTube Red could come in handy here since both allow you to download playlists, songs or albums for offline listening.

MISC.

There is nothing worse than being sick on a plane (other than having screaming children around too), but when I feel even a little stuffed up I will take a decongestant a little before boarding. However, always consult a medical professional first, because I certainly am not one. AA
