Beauty counter dependents commonly run among us. If you happen to be one, drop the $15 face mask and rummage through your fridge in order to hit the jackpot of new illuminating products. Most of us love food—and breakfast—as much as the next person, so what better way to take advantage of some fresh produce than to mash it on your face, right?

You’ve probably heard of mashed avocado on toast, but try spreading an abundance of that fatty goodness on your face. You can make face masks solely using avocado or by mixing in simple ingredients such as cucumber or aloe vera. When you’re mushing the green goo around, don’t be afraid to go a little past that hairline of yours. Actually, just go ahead and massage it throughout the entirety of your scalp while you’re at it. Those with dry scalps could find this to be a saving grace—the amino acids and proteins from the avocado will do wonders for the revitalization of your scalp.

If you have frizzy hair and you’re feeling a bit wild, apply the green fruit throughout the entirety of your hair along with two tablespoons of avocado oil. Allowing this to sit for fifteen minutes before shampooing your hair will leave your locks shining bright like those diamonds Rihanna’s always singing about. Avocados can be used for so many fortifying purposes that don’t just pertain to how full your stomach may be after consuming one.

Now it’s time for everyone’s favorite topic, wrinkles!! Something everyone enjoys reading about because let’s face it, if you don’t have them now you will get them at some point. Avocados can help you there too, but let us not forget about other glorious brunch foods that can save your skin.

LET'S BEGIN WITH FRUIT Bananas have endless benefits not only for your body as a whole, but especially the skin you’re trying to preserve. While they are heavy with antioxidants and minerals your skin desires, creating a purely banana based paste can help rid your skin of harsh lines. To eliminate dead skin cells and smooth the skin even further, you can rub other fresh fruits such as pineapple and watermelon on the areas you wish to target. Then we have the holy grail of brunch (not mimosas, sorry)—eggs.

What can you do with eggs, you ask? From face to hair masks, eggs have never been seen to be so versatile. An extremely easy face mask can be made by simply pairing egg whites with honey, painting your face and allowing it to dry. To treat acne and scars you can mix egg whites and lemon juice; let the mixture dry and then remove with warm water in order to improve your skin. When applied in these ways, eggs whites become a miracle treatment in their prevention of discoloration and the way in which they make your face tighter and more firm. Research has also proven that lysozyme, an enzyme found in egg whites, preserves the natural pink colors in the skin, which ultimately acts as a natural color corrector.

Of course, it is extremely important for one to be careful when experimenting with different products—or produce, if you will. Especially on the face. Everyone is different, and needless to say, so are faces. Some people have oily skin, some have sensitive skin, dry skin...the list can go on and on. The last thing you want to do is waste the last bits of your favorite breakfast foods only to breakout and scare yourself out of ever trying another DIY facemask ever again. That would just be a shame.

The first thing would be to simply know your skin. As I mentioned before about acne prone and scarred skin—egg whites are a great ingredient to lather up with. Besides the yolk-less acne fighter, honey is another beneficial ingredient. You could use either a simple honey mask (quick and simple—for you busy bees reading this) or mix in ingredients like lemon and cinnamon. Honey on it’s own carries so much great potential for your needy skin, it has antibiotic and antifungal benefits which your skin is craving in order to live its life to the fullest. Cinnamon carries these qualities as well and is proficient in healing blemishes. Lush employee, Angela, at Pennsylvania’s King of Prussia location, gives Yolk some proper insider tips on what foods are face-approved, according to the handmade cosmetic company. She reassures us that honey and egg whites are most definitely go-to ingredients for dry, acne prone skin. Honey’s revitalizing qualities restore the moisture back into the dry skin, generally improving the overall appearance of your face.

One of the displays that catches the attention to Lush shoppers is definitely the face-mask bar. Now, before getting into details there are definitely some things you should know about not only the face-mask bar, but Lush itself. Basically the store is amazing—as soon as your foot steps through the door you should roll up your sleeves and get ready because one of the friendly employees will make your hands (or face) feel softer than ever. They will allow you to try almost anything so you can get a little taste of the product before purchasing anything.

Available for you to scrub all over your body are an abundance of different fruits and vegetables. Blueberry, strawberry, lemon, banana, almonds, and even asparagus and garlic masks were placed in the display, just chillin’ in ice. Angela let the Yolk staff in on which products and ingredients are good for which particular skin types.

The winner for the most interesting ingredient is definitely asparagus. “It makes your skin glow, so if you want to feel extra pretty, you must use the asparagus face mask. It can be used for all skin types,” explains Angela. She also explains that blueberries also give you this glowing, radiant look due to the blend of nutrients in the fruit. It is high in fiber as well as Vitamins A and C which are good in repairing broken capillaries below the skin’s surface.

Although, the greatest of all of masks would have to be coffee, just because coffee is great for absolutely everything. There are endless uses for the magical beans. The list can go on and on, this ranges anywhere from how to apply the crushed beans to your face, hair or body, to how you can benefit from it.

For starters, its best and most commonly known use is for exfoliation purposes. Not only does this approach rid your beautiful face and body of dead and useless skin but it also prevents dryness. The sweet aroma of coffee will have you craving a cup, but your face will thank you after this nice treat.

It is essential to think outside of the box when it comes to feeding your skin, you definitely want your epidermis to receive all appropriate nutrients it possibly can. While relying on store bought items and products is not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes you have to adjust and try different home-made remedies personalized and suitable for your skin.
