Valuing Internships

I knew very little about finance and yet I became an intern for a life insurance company. It was weird yet amazing, exciting yet frightening. Internships provide you with experiences that can help shape your future career, whether you decide to continue along that path, or go in another direction. Either way, not to sound too cliché, internships can open doors and provide you with more experiences than you may realize. Not only did I learn more about my future career path, but I also learned more about life itself. Here is what I learned during my time as a social media intern in finance.
1. The value of planning First off, I did not know much about life insurance or about the world of finance, but over my time as an intern, I have learned more than just procedures of marketing and social media (which is the team I was a part of), but I slowly gained more knowledge of the financial industry. I would not say that I am now fluent in the language of finance, but I know realize that I have to start thinking about my financial future as soon as possible because life can creep up on you.
2. The power of teams Life insurance and finance, in my opinion, are both boring, but working with the marketing team made it all a little more fun. Everyday we tried to have as much fun as possible, and being part of that fun team was so ingrained in the company culture. The power of a good environment and team can make all the difference with any type of work, and I was lucky enough to get along with the social media team and enjoy working with them everyday.
3. Internships aren’t your career I always thought that I would intern in some large p
ublic relations or marketing agency, but, in one way, I am glad that I did not. As an intern in an industry that I was not completely comfortable with, I feel as though I was able to grow a more as a person and as well as a professional. Through engaging with financial content everyday as part of my internship, I have broadened not only my knowledge, but in some respect my skill set. I now realize that a career in finance is feasible.
