Brunch: Fad or Trend?

From around 11 am to 3 pm on the weekends we can find millennials to baby boomers indulging in a meal that is the marriage breakfast and lunch: brunch. This portmanteau has been enjoyed since its conception in 19th century England and has only expanded over time, becoming “the thing” to do on the weekend. Whether it be family going out after Sunday morning Church service or millennials looking for a way to cure that awful hangover, brunch is enjoyed by all, but is it just a fad or a long-term trend?

Brunch was thought of to be a fad when it first began, but we have seen it puff up like a pastry, filling our hearts and stomachs with joy. I am one of those people who you can find with a mimosa in one hand and a ‘brunch burger’ in the other on Saturday or Sunday morning attempting to make the most of a weekend that never seems long enough.

It would bring me great sadness to see brunch come to an end, but Geoffrey Chaucer once wrote that “all good things must come to an end,” but do they really have to? I don’t think they do, and I’m not sure brunch ever will. So screw you Geoffrey.

People everywhere brunch on the weekends. Just a few weeks ago I went out for brunch after church with my grandmother, and the restaurant was packed. In the words of the great Leslie Knope (please watch Parks and Recreation if you have not already), “Why would anyone ever eat anything besides breakfast food?” I wholeheartedly agree. There is a beauty to breakfast food, but people have truly brought creativity into the meal. We have brunch burgers, baked eggs, chicken and waffles and the delicious list goes on. More and more spots are popping up all over for your brunching pleasure. These brunch spots, usually serving from 9am to about 3pm, become packed on the weekends as friends and families pile in to enjoy this wonderful marriage of meals.

So don’t worry. I do not see this beautiful midday meal ending anytime soon, so go out and treat yo’self (again another Parks and Rec reference) to a nice brunch. To make it easier, here are some places to whet your appetite!

1. Drake Tavern, Jenkintown

2. Sabrina's Cafe, Philadelphia

3. Carrol Place, NYC
